In this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination, the top scorer achieved a remarkable 428 out of 500 marks. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu unveiled the results for the 1,406,557 candidates who undertook the KCPE exams.
Addressing the public at the newly inaugurated Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) headquarters in South B, Nairobi, CS Machogu highlighted that a total of 8,525 candidates, constituting 0.60% of this year’s class, attained scored at least 400 marks.
Additionally, he pointed out that 352,782 candidates, equivalent to 24.92% of the cohort, secured marks ranging from 300 to 399. The bracket of 200-299 marks recorded the highest number of candidates, totaling 658,278 and representing 48.49% of the cohort.
Another 382,025 candidates secured scores ranging from 100 to 199 marks, constituting 27.05% of the total candidate pool.
A total of 2,060 candidates, accounting for 0.15% of the cohort, scored less than 99 marks.
In terms of gender distribution, male candidates comprised 51.3% of this year’s class, while females made up 48.7%.
Education Cabinet Secretary Machogu highlighted that female candidates outperformed their male counterparts in English language, Kiswahili, and Kenya Sign Language. Conversely, male candidates showed slightly better performance in Mathematics and Science.
Notably, 9,354 candidates did not participate in the examination, and they have been given the opportunity to take the exam in January.
CS Machogu commended the high levels of integrity observed in this year’s examination, emphasizing that only 2 candidates were implicated in cases of exam malpractice.
The KCPE examination, conducted between October 30 and November 1, marked the conclusion of the 8-4-4 education system in primary schools, which had been in place for 39 years since 1985. The new 2-6-3-3-3 competency-based curriculum (CBC), introduced in 2017, replaces the former system.
“All education indicators affirm that the cohort is experiencing quality learning and teaching. I want to assure the country that all the necessary curriculum materials are in place to support the learners,” stated CS Machogu on Thursday.
To access their results, candidates can receive them on their mobile phones by sending their index number followed by the term “KCPE” to the shortcode 40054. Each SMS will incur a charge of Ksh. 25.
